As we prepare to welcome students back for the new school year, we want to share an important update regarding a new safety measure at Punxsutawney Area High School.
New metal detectors have been installed at the school as part of our continued commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff.
The first day of school is Wednesday, August 26. While students will see the metal detectors when they arrive, the detectors will not be in use until Monday, August 31. This will give students several days to become familiar with the equipment and understand what the entry process will look like.
During the first few days of school, students will have time during class to learn about the metal detectors, review expectations, and ask questions. Our goal is to make sure students understand the process before we begin using the detectors and to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Metal water bottles will not be permitted.
Metal bottles will require additional screening and could significantly slow the entry process for everyone. Students who wish to bring a water bottle should bring a plastic or other non-metal water bottle instead.
Please Check Backpacks Before Coming to School
Families are encouraged to help students review the contents of their backpacks, bags, and jackets before coming to school. Students should not bring items that are prohibited by school rules, including:
- Weapons or items that could be considered weapons
- Knives, pocketknives, or other sharp objects
- Fireworks or explosive materials
- Vapes, electronic cigarettes, tobacco products, or other prohibited substances
- Metal water bottles
- Any other item prohibited by the Student Code of Conduct
Students should also be mindful of everyday objects they may have placed in a backpack or jacket pocket and forgotten about. Taking a few minutes to check bags before leaving home will help everyone move through the screening process more efficiently.
We recognize that this is a new procedure for our students, families, and staff. We will work closely with students during the first several days of school so they know what to expect, have an opportunity to ask questions, and feel comfortable with the process.
