Craig Dietz, Motivational Speaker, Visits PAHS

Motivational speaker Craig Dietz recently visited Punxsutawney Area High School and delivered an inspirational talk to 7th-12th grade students.  Dietz, a St Marys native, was born without limbs; and rather than be a victim of circumstance, Dietz uses his circumstances to challenge himself and others towards being the best versions of themselves.

In a previous life, Dietz worked as an attorney for the cities of Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.  Dietz notes that while he chose to be a lawyer, being a professional speaker was the career that chose him.

Through many stories and demonstrations, Dietz inspired students to rise above adversity and to write their own stories.  “All of you have the ability/obligation to go out and define your own potential in the world,” said Dietz.

Students were inspired to learn of the many activities that Dietz is involved with, despite what would otherwise seem impossible.  In his spare time, Dietz can be found bowling, skiing, playing volleyball, hunting, fishing, playing the drums or driving around the country in his van.  His greatest passion, however, is swimming.  Dietz has competed in open-water swims across the United States and South Africa, ranging in distance from one to 6.2 miles, demonstrating one of Dietz’s many rules - “Never judge a book by its cover.”

“Craig is a true inspiration and an exemplar of perseverance,  overcoming adversity, and taking control of any circumstance before letting those circumstances control you. His message will resonate with anyone that has the opportunity to listen.” said head principal Mr. Manuel Barbazzeni.

Dietz credits a good sense of humor and the importance of family for his perseverance.  He notes that “a good sense of humor fortifies the soul.”  He also explained to students the difference between giving a man a fish and teaching them to fish.  “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish and he’ll be fed for life.  My family was instrumental in teaching me how to fish.”
