Ag club volunteers at local food pantry

Students from the Punxsutawney Area High School’s Agriculture Club volunteer monthly at the Woodland Avenue United Methodist Church (UMC) by helping unload food from the Second Harvest Food Truck.

According to the Second Harvest website, Second Harvest, based out of Erie, PA, is a member of Feeding America, a network of food banks and distribution programs across the United States.  This membership allows Second Harvest to cooperate with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, and to benefit from national publicity and mutual support.  Currently, Second Harvest services eleven counties in Northwest Pennsylvania.  Through this partnership, the Woodland Avenue UMC is able to provide food to an average of 125 families per month.

Punxsutawney’s Agriculture Club, which has been in existence since 2008, has been volunteering with the food pantry for the past three years.

“PAHS Ag Club is a great group of kids who are always willing to help others in our school and community.  The food pantry is a needed community service, and our club looks forward to working there each month,” commented club advisor Mr. Chad Stiteler, who has been teaching wood shop at Punxsutawney Area High School for 25 years.

The food pantry at Woodland Avenue UMC is open on the third Monday of each month with distribution starting at 5:00pm.  More information can be obtained by contacting the Woodland Avenue UMC church office 814-938-8160.
