Punxsutawney Honors Local Heroes at Annual Military and First Responders Appreciation Game

The Punxsutawney community came together Friday evening, September 5th, to honor the brave men and women who serve our nation and protect our neighborhoods during the annual Military and First Responders Appreciation Night at the Chucks’ home football game against Bradford.
The evening began with fire trucks lining the familiar “S” curve outside the stadium, a powerful display of strength and service. Nearby, military recruiters set up tents and tables to greet families and share opportunities with students.

The event began with a complimentary tailgate hosted by the First and Ten Club Football Boosters, treating all service members and first responders to pulled pork sandwiches and refreshments. The meal provided a time of fellowship before the crowd gathered for the pregame ceremony.
At 6:30 p.m., the honorees assembled near the scoreboard side of the home bleachers and were led onto the field by the Honor Guard. The marching band, cheerleaders, and student section formed a tunnel as the teams made their entrances.

Public address announcer Mr. Kriebel welcomed the crowd and invited fans to rise in a standing ovation for the military and first responders. The moment was capped by the playing of the National Anthem by the PAHS Marching Band which drew cheers and applause from the stands.
This year’s distinguished guest was retired Pastor Bob Bish, a 92-year-old U.S. Army veteran and the second-oldest member of the Mahoning Valley VFW Post 2076. Bish, who served as a corporal in the First Infantry Division—known as the “Big Red One”—during the post-World War II occupation of Germany, carried the game ball to midfield and conducted the coin toss. His presence served as a living reminder of sacrifice, courage, and community pride.

Kickoff followed at 7:00 p.m., with the game itself serving as the backdrop to a night that was about much more than football.
Principal Dr. Sheena Smelko along with assistant principals Mr. Kyle Gordon and Mr. Mark Badtorff expressed their pride and appreciation in serving a community that values service and patriotism like Punxsutawney.
The annual tradition once again united Punxsutawney in gratitude for its local heroes. As the Big Red One’s motto declares: “No Mission Too Difficult, No Sacrifice Too Great, Duty First.” Those words reflected not only Pastor Bish’s service but also the spirit of every man and woman that was honored on the field.
