On Friday January 10th, the Punxsutawney Area High School published their first edition of their school’s newspaper, The ShadowThe Shadow used to be a regular part of PAHS but in recent years has lost traction; that was until PAHS Student Emily Wisnesky took charge in rebooting The Shadow and starting the Journalism club.

“I noticed that after the journalism class went away, we didn't have a school paper and most schools do have a school paper and it would be a neat opportunity for students to be able to explore careers in writing and journalism,” said Emily Wisnesky.

Mrs. Leslie, an ELA teacher here at PAHS, is the advisor of The Shadow. She shared how she was a journalism student throughout high school and said, “I realized there was a need for it in our school and when Emily reached out to me, I decided to go through with it.”

Not only will it benefit students wanting to be in the club, but it will benefit the student body, as it will keep both students and faculty informed. Leslie expressed how it’s important to showcase the great things going on within the school, the lives of students, and the community.

The Shadow offers a vast variety of different articles from reporting on current events, entertainment, sports, and lifestyle. Meaning there is something for everyone to fit their special interests.

The club is planning on releasing monthly editions and hopes on branching out into other areas of journalism such as photojournalism and photography. Allowing for students to explore different fields of writing and expand their Horizons.

Emily shared how she hopes to help teach members and people who want to write how to report on news as well as establish the basics of journalism. She also shared how she wants to have a job in the writing field, so having an outlet for her, and others will help improve their skills.

The staff members of Journalism Club celebrated the launch of The Shadow’s first edition on Friday, January 10th. They opened the invite up to the rest of the student body, in hopes to excite the student body of the reboot of the new and improved school newspaper.

Wisnesky says, “We want people to know that it’s here and we really want people to read it, because getting it published is one thing but getting people to read it is another difficult thing to do, so I really hope that we can encourage more people to read it.”

The Shadow exemplifies just one of the vast learning opportunities available to the student body of PAHS. You can access The Shadow through the high school homepage, located under the activities tab which provides access to the website. New content will be published at the beginning of each month.
