Amidst all the local Groundhog Day festivities, Punxsutawney Area High School’s art club took part in the celebration by painting windows for local businesses.

The PAHS art club is one of the most successful and active clubs at PAHS. With over 111 members, the club is advised by PAHS art teacher Christina Young. Young, who has been with the district for 16 years, is also the head of the art department.

Young has given a multitude of students the ability to interact with the community through events like window painting. She notes that her favorite part about advising the club includes extending artistic opportunities beyond the classroom.

Students painted the windows of several storefronts, giving them the ability to show off their talent to the record-setting tourists that visited our community while being enjoyed by our local community too.  Businesses included B’s Books, Roseman’s Florist, Chamber of Commerce, Beatty's Jewelers, The Shadow Hotel, Grace and Grit and Bobbie’s Hair Studio.

“Building relationships within the community is very important when trying to find your role within the community, and to make lots of cool things happen,” commented Young.

As the year begins to wind down, and students begin to lay plans for their final art projects, the art club is currently planning two field trips including a visit to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and a trip to Pittsburgh’s Museum of Illusions.
